Is an Electric Flosser a Good Option?

Is an Electric Flosser a Good Option?

Flossing once a day is a recommended practice that all dental patients are told today. Regular flossing keeps bacteria and food from building up between the teeth and can help prevent conditions like gingivitis and eventually gum disease from developing. With that said, flossing can be uncomfortable and tiresome to do.

That has more and more people looking into devices like electric flossers to make their lives easier. Water picks have been around for more than a decade, and many dentists use similar tools when cleaning a patient’s teeth during professional cleaning visits. So, are these tools good to use, and can they be used instead of string flossing? We’ll cover all of that below.

Should You Use an Electric Flosser?

Electric flossers are powerful devices that blast away built-up plaque with a strong stream of water from a fine tip. These devices are more comfortable than strong flossing for most, and they work well when trying to get into hard-to-reach areas like in-between braces. Recent studies show that electric flossers actually clean in-between teeth better than string flossing does.

These results don’t have many dentists telling their patients to switch from one to the other though. Instead, they’re recommended to use electric flossers as an additional cleaning tool rather than the only flossing tool. Using both is really the best way to clean your mouth and prevent conditions such as gingivitis and gum disease from developing over time.

Electric flossers are useful tools and you should certainly think about adding one to your home. With that said, they shouldn’t be used as the only way to clean in-between your teeth if possible.

It’s best to use string floss and an electric flosser once a day to get in-between your teeth. If you refuse to floss with string though an electric flosser is better than nothing. We want everyone to clean their teeth the best way that they can, and to build healthy cleaning habits over time. An electric flosser can definitely help you do that if you take the time to use it.
