When you think about foods that are good for your teeth, chances are that chocolate is not the first thing that you think of.
In fact, you probably think that chocolate is something that you can only have in small amounts. That is true, but only up to a point. The right type of chocolate is actually good for your teeth.
Dark Chocolate
There are many health benefits to dark chocolate. Studies suggest that it is good for your heart, good for your brain, and may even fight off certain types of cancer. It turns out that dark chocolate is good for your mouth as well. Cocoa beans are filled with a couple of different types of antioxidants. Some studies suggest that the chemicals in cocoa beans do a better job of fighting off cavities than fluoride does. Dark chocolate can also keep bad bacteria from sticking to your teeth.
The Right Type of Chocolate
In order to receive oral benefits from chocolate, you need to make sure that it is the right type of chocolate. Milk chocolate is highly processed and filled with sugar and will do your teeth more harm than good. White chocolate will also not provide any added benefits. Remember as well that not all dark chocolates are the same. To receive benefits for your mouth, look for dark chocolate that is 70 percent cocoa or higher. Be warned, however, it will be bitter.
