What Does an Ultrasonic Scaler Do?That filmy sticky residue that forms on your teeth is called plaque, and if left to build up on your teeth, it can cause something called tartar (or calculus), a hard residue that can damage your teeth. Brushing and flossing your teeth every night can help prevent this buildup from forming, but for persistent and stubborn buildup, we use an ultrasonic scaler to remove it effectively.
In the past, scaling was performed manually with a metal pick. While it was not necessarily painful, it was often quite uncomfortable, requiring you to keep your mouth propped open as we labored carefully over your teeth. While we still give you exceptional care with an ultrasonic scaler, your time in our chair is greatly reduced when we use an ultrasonic scaler on your teeth. An ultrasonic scaler can be more effective at removing tartar in about a third of the amount of time than a manual scaler! They are especially effective when you have deeper gum pockets, allowing us to clean them better than a manual scaler could.
An ultrasonic scaler works by using vibrations to remove calculus from your teeth. The wand has electromagnetic energy working inside it, causing the tip to thrum and remove all of the buildups from your teeth. It’s remarkably gentle for being so powerful, allowing us to make your teeth sparkle without any pain or discomfort to you. Our ultrasonic scaler also releases a small jet of water as we work on your teeth, a process called lavage, that serves two purposes. First, it keeps the tip of our ultrasonic scaler cool to the touch, keeping it from overheating while we work. Secondly, it acts as a cleansing stream of water, flushing away any debris that can accumulate as we clean your teeth.
Ultrasonic scalers aren’t just great for removing tartar from your teeth; they can also remove superficial stains that may have formed on your teeth. If you smoke or drink red wine, we can remove these stains just by cleaning your teeth with our ultrasonic scaler! Not only do you get that awesome feeling of having smooth and clean teeth, but your smile will also be brighter afterward!
