Dentures & Partials
Causes of Tooth LossThe number one cause of tooth loss is gum or periodontal disease. When plaque and bacteria irritate your gums, they cause inflammation. Without treatment, the inflamed tissue starts to pull away from the teeth, creating a place for bacteria to hide. Once below the gumline, the bacteria begin to attack the periodontal ligaments and the jawbone, which causes them to become weak. Over time, your teeth become loose and fall out.
There are a few other causes of tooth loss as well.
What Are Dentures?Dentures are the traditional treatment for tooth loss. The most well-known dentures are full dentures or those that replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Dentures are a removable prosthesis that consists of false teeth set into a base. Modern dentures often use acrylic resin teeth and a gum colored acrylic base. Advancements in dental technology have greatly improved the quality of traditional dentures, reducing their bulk while making them look much more natural. The base is designed to rest solely on your gums, which provide your restoration with the support it needs to function.
Your dentures are created from impressions of your mouth. These impressions are taken after any necessary tooth extractions take place. After the impressions have been taken, they are sent off to our dental lab, where the restoration is designed and then brought to life. Before you leave with your new dentures, we check to make sure that they fit properly, that your bite is good, and that they are comfortable. If no adjustments are needed, you can leave the office with a beautiful, healthy new smile.
Replacing Sections With PartialsIf you are missing a section of teeth, but all of the rest of the teeth in the arch is completely healthy, you may be recommended for a partial denture. Similar in design to a full denture, partial dentures allow for your healthy teeth to remain in their positions, avoiding the need for unnecessary extractions. Partial dentures are similar in design and similar in the way that they are created. However, along with only replacing a section of teeth, partial dentures do have one other difference. These dentures have clasps that attach to your healthy teeth for additional support.
