How Can We Fix a Tooth That Has a Crack? If you have a cracked tooth, treatment depends on the location of the crack, the size of it, and your symptoms. Also, the treatment approach used depends on whether or not the crack extends into the gum line. The following information details what treatments may be used to fix a crack in a tooth.

Bonding and Crowns

If a crack is minor, it may be treated with a bonding material. This conservative dental approach uses a plastic resin to restore the tooth's appearance and function. If the crack is more severe, a dental crown may be applied that is made of ceramic or porcelain.

The crown is fitted over the cracked tooth to protect it and save it. To proceed with this type of fitting, some of the enamel must be shaved from the tooth to install the crown. An impression of the tooth is made so the crown can be made. Both bonding and crown restorations are common methods used to fix cracks in teeth.

Root Canals and Extraction

If a crack is big or so extensive that it reaches the pulp of a tooth, a root canal is usually performed. The procedure involves removing the damaged pulp, so the tooth does not get infected. If the crack is so extensive that the nerves and roots are irreparably damaged, the tooth is usually extracted. If the tooth has hairline cracks and does not cause pain, it is usually left alone.

If you have a crack in your tooth, have it looked at right away. We can help you find the best way to repair the tooth and keep it intact.
